Tackling Overcrowding

What is ‘Tackling Overcrowding’?
The concept of overcrowding is used in two areas of housing policy: enforcing decent standards in all tenures; and in the allocation of social housing to those most in need.
Definition of overcrowding
Unfortunately many social landlords in the London and surrounding areas fall short in meeting the above criteria, as the constant demand for housing puts pressure on housing stock, especially with a growing population.
As Building Surveyors, we are actively involved in trying to improve the standard of living for many families living in social housing. We understand the impact on health and social well-being, as overcrowding spells misery for many families who cannot call their home “a home”.
SDS is currently involved in a pioneering program with a large local authority which is taking affirmative action in making a difference to thousands of families within their borough. By utilising the existing land, we have improved the housing conditions of many residents, and ultimately reduced waiting lists for new homes.
Our architectural team has been involved in extensive consultation with local Planners, Building Control Inspectors, Residents and Clients to develop proposals for providing additional space for dwellings deemed to be overcrowded. We have successfully designed and managed the refurbishment of 50nr homes, and improved the living conditions for many residents.
